Château Pomeaux
250 Metres from Cheval Blanc, a World of Its Own
Nestled on the southeastern slope of the Pomerol plateau, Château Pomeaux sits in exceptional company — just 250 metres from Cheval Blanc, 500 metres from Château Figeac, and 1.5 kilometres from the legendary Petrus. It's a rare privilege to share a terroir with such illustrious neighbours, and it shows in every bottle.
The estate's two hectares are planted entirely with Merlot, from vines averaging around 45 years old, grown on a distinctive mix of gravel, clay and iron-rich sand known locally as "crasse de fer." Farmed using organic and biodynamic principles, the vineyard is tended with real care for the land — dense planting at 6,600 vines per hectare reflects a commitment to concentration and quality over yield.
Under the guidance of Joel Palous, Château Pomeaux has built a reputation for producing rich, structured Pomerol wines with real depth and elegance. The wine is aged 18 to 24 months in new oak, drawing on barrels from three distinguished coopers — each contributing something different to the final blend, from bright fruit-forward notes to velvety mid-palate texture and a long, refined finish. A further year of bottle ageing follows before release.
Production is deliberately limited to around 8,000 bottles a year, underscoring the estate's focus on quality and exclusivity rather than volume. Joel Palous has overseen Château Pomeaux since the estate's founding in 1998, when the new owner entrusted him with its care. The grandson of a winegrower himself, Palous describes running the property as a lifelong dream realised — living and breathing winemaking in Pomerol with genuine passion, vintage after vintage.
